Use of HBI in Cleveland-Cliffs EAF and AOD Operations
Hot briquetted iron (HBI) produced from Cleveland-Cliffs IronUnits LLC plant in Toledo, Ohio, USA, is used at Cliffs’ electric arc furnace (EAF) plants as a high-quality feed material to replace steel scrap in the EAFs and as a coolant in the argon oxygen decarburizer (AOD). In this paper, the characteristics of the HBI will be reviewed. The use of HBI in the EAFs and AODs and its influence on EAF/AOD operations will be discussed. The benefits and challenges of using HBI in the EAFs and AODs, as well as the efforts to improve HBI value-in-use, will be presented.
