Chemistry and Process Optimization for Operational Robustness in the Production of SS Grade 55 Cold-Rolled Galvanized Sheet Steel
Cold-rolled galvanized structural steel SS55 is widely used in the construction industry. Processing of this steel often results in edge issues and property variability. In the current study, chemistry and hot rolling parameters were optimized for the mechanical properties of the hot-rolled skelp. Through laboratory annealing simulation on cold-rolled sheets, an optimum galvanizing processing window was developed. The implementation of this optimized chemistry and processing resulted in robust production of SS grade 55 sheet steel with minimal property variation. Significant cost reduction could be achieved through leaning down of the chemistry and minimization of rejections and reworks.
