Carbon Footprint Reduction by Charcoal Injection Into the Electric Arc Furnace at Vallourec Brazil Steelmaking
CO2 emissions are an important issue for green steel production and environmental sustainability. The electric arc furnace (EAF) process needs a source of carbon for foaming the slag so that the arc is covered and the thermal efficiency is achieved. Vallourec Brazil Steelmaking counts on a singular Consteel EAF that uses hot metal supplied by a charcoal blast furnace. Trials have been carried out replacing the pet coke with charcoal, which would be a "green" carbon source. The industrial results indicated that it is possible to implement it, replacing a fossil carbon source with a renewable one.
