From Concept to Reality: First Results From Ultrathick Slab Casting for Heavy Plate Production

Ultrathick slab bow-type continuous casters from Primetals Technologies are now in successful operation, marking a significant advancement in heavy plate production. Capable of casting slabs up to 460 mm thick, they have shown significant improvements in product quality. Early results confirm a reduction ratio smaller than 3 is sufficient during rolling, while still eliminating central porosity. This is achieved through hard reduction, offering five times the reduction of soft reduction, and the Single Roll DynaGap segment, which ensures precise, dynamic roller alignment at the final solidification. This breakthrough enables the efficient production of heavy plates previously unattainable through continuous casting.
