Major Reduction of Blast Furnace CO2 Emissions by Pushing Forward the Injection of Hydrogen-Rich Auxiliary Fuels

It is commonly agreed that the injection of hydrogen-rich fuel such as oil, natural gas or pure hydrogen is limited at the blast furnace due to heat balance constrains. Phoenix Technologies SA developed a smart solution using plasma heaters to push forward the limits for hydrogen-rich fuels. The solution is reversible, flexible, doesn’t need major changes at the blast furnace and is cost-effective. Compared to a conventional operation with pulverized coal injection, the CO2 emissions can be reduced by more than 300 kg/t.
