  • The Revival of the KOBM Converter

The Revival of the KOBM Converter

Green transition of iron- and steelmaking is in full swing and significantly changing our industry; consequently, the share of EAF-based steelmaking using scrap or DRI is increasing. However, a considerable share of converter-based steelmaking will remain for production of high-quality steels. To minimize the CO2 emissions in converter steelmaking, its scrap rate needs to be maximized. Thanks to its combined blowing technology, the KOBM converter has considerable advantages for steel quality and scrap rate increase. The unique features of the KOBM process and results achieved in two recent references will be presented as well as an outlook on future development.
