Novel Electromagnetic Level Indication (EMLI) Implementation for Real-Time Steel Level Monitoring in Tundish
Accurate control of tundish steel levels is essential for stable casting, consistent quality and safety. Proper steel bath levels maintain a stable pressure head, ensure uniform mold flow and limit slag entrainment. Harsh tundish conditions and dynamic flux layer challenge measurement systems, affecting accuracy and reliability in determining the true steel level. This study reports the successful EMLI implementation at ArcelorMittal Dunkerque, delivering real-time steel level, stabilizing casting speeds, reduced slag entrainment - improving cleanliness and surface quality, and lowered breakout risk. Optimized end-of-sequence control cuts steel losses, minimizing residual steel, increasing yield and reducing scrap generation.
