  • Implementation of the Largest Digital Substation in the U.S. Metals Industry: A Big River Steel Case Study

Implementation of the Largest Digital Substation in the U.S. Metals Industry: A Big River Steel Case Study

Big River Steel has deployed a large-scale digital substation at its new 3-million-ton capacity facility in Osceola, Ark., USA. The digital substation applied IEC 61850 standards, intelligent electronic devices, switching infrastructure and SCADA integration to enhance reliability and operational safety in steelmaking. This paper shares the conceptualization, technical solutions, decision-making, testing and operational benefits of the implementation. A discussion on lessons learned, and the impact on schedule and execution models, provide guidance for future digital substation projects in the metals industry and other energy-intensive sectors.
