Application of High-Temperature Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy in Process Metallurgy: Past Activities and Ongoing Studies

High-temperature confocal laser scanning microscopy (HT-CLSM) is an in-situ direct observation device that could observe crystallization behaviors for liquid/solid and solid/solid transformations in metals. This technology was developed 30 years ago, and it is suited for in-situ studies of solidification, inclusion motion in liquid steel, slag crystallization, etc. Furthermore, the capability of HT-CLSM used in physical metallurgy, in particular austenite decomposition in sold-state steels, will be discussed. This presentation summarizes past research activity of inclusion motion at multiple steel/slag/gas interfaces, and also ongoing studies regarding slag separation during the smelting of direct reduced iron.
