  • The Next Big Step Toward Industrializing the Hydrogen-Based Fine Ore Reduction Process

The Next Big Step Toward Industrializing the Hydrogen-Based Fine Ore Reduction Process

Direct reduction of iron ore fines is a promising approach to enhance the efficiency of DRI production and to decrease CO2 footprint. In 2016, Primetals Technologies initiated the development of the fluidized bed-based HYFOR® process (Hydrogen-based Fine Ore Reduction). The next step toward industrializing the process is now underway. The Hy4Smelt project (HYFOR + electrical smelting) is being carried out by a consortium consisting of Primetals Technologies and its strategic partner Mitsubishi Corp., voestalpine and Rio Tinto. In the current paper, a retrospective look at the development of HYFOR will be provided, along with an update on the Hy4Smelt project status.
