  • Edge Drop Compensation in Cold Rolling Mills

Edge Drop Compensation in Cold Rolling Mills

Applications of modern high-grade silicon steels — such as lamination stacks for electric drives — demand a highly uniform thickness distribution across the strip width. However, the combination of hardness and brittleness presents significant challenges to the rolling process, increasing the risk of strip breaks. Nevertheless, trimming can be reduced and the overall strip profile improved by employing edge drop compensation (EDC), which adjusts the strip profile near the edges through the shifting of tapered work rolls. This paper presents a comprehensive EDC approach and demonstrates its application in a tandem cold rolling mill.
