Evaluation and Development of Nozzle Designs for Thin and Medium-Thick Slab Casters Operating at Medium to High Casting Rates
Thin and medium-thick slab casters are high-performance continuous casting units presenting challenges in nozzle design due to complex geometries and refractory life expectancy. These casters operate at high casting rates, up to 9 tons per strand, such as for a 135-mm-thick medium caster. This study develops and evaluates designs using modeling and simulation tools. The designs are assessed on performance and feasibility metrics. Understanding their performance is crucial for current and future casters in North America and globally.
