A Recent Process Modernization for Large-Diameter Wire Rod Mill

The need to accommodate rolling advances mixed with increasing customer product demands are driving wire rod mills to replace or upgrade their existing cooling system, as well as developing ways to understand, optimize and manage their process for a wide range of products. This paper outlines a recent STELMOR® upgrade engineered by Primetals Technologies to optimize process and improve mechanical properties, scale, the coil package of large diameter high carbon rod, and more. The results include an evaluation of transformation temperature and cooling, increased tensile strengths, reduced tensile variance, scale changes, and reduced alloying.
