Development of Flash Reduction Technologies in H2DRI Processes
There is a push toward H2DRI technologies that directly use iron ore fines. Previously, fluidized bed technologies have been developed for utilizing iron ore fines. In flash reduction processes, reduction is carried out in time scales of seconds to a few minutes. Flash Ironmaking Technology, pioneered by Sohn and his co-workers in the early 2000s, operates above 1,100°C. Currently, a H2-based flash ironmaking technology called ZESTY is being tested at a pilot-scale plant in Australia that operates below 1,100°C. This paper provides details and a critical analysis of these different ironmaking technologies.
