Start-Up of Endless Steel Processing Technology at Big River Steel and Its Capabilities to Produce the Next Generation of Products to Serve the North American Steel Market
Endless Strip Processing (ESP) has a unique way to produce steel with near-zero CO2 emissions, zero fossil fuels and lowest energy consumption among similar technologies. The strength of ESP technology is the production of ultrathin-gauge material down to 0.8 mm depending on the steel grade, as well as production of thin-gauge high-strength grades due to endless cast-rolling operation. This paper describes the inclusion of ESP technology with the state-of-the-art meltshop and downstream processing at Big River Steel. Dimensional quality and homogeneity of mechanical properties are explored to expand Big River Steel's existing product mix.
