Challenges During Secondary Metallurgy in the Transformation From Converter to Electric Steelmaking
The path for reducing steel's CO2 impact is defined. The production of steel using EAFs is increasing with scrap and substituting virgin materials like DRI/HBI. The change of input material quality poses new challenges for steel refining at secondary metallurgy stations like ladle refining furnace, vacuum tank degasser and RH recirculation degasser. Sulfur, nitrogen and tramp elements reduction and control is becoming more difficult considering the low availability of pure materials and scrap quality is also not able to match the requirements. Revised processing routes, additional equipment installation and meltshop layout redefinition are discussed in this paper.
