A Techno-Commercial Optimization of Steelmaking Refractories and Alloys
In high-productivity steelmaking shops, availability and performance of refractories and alloys are critical. In today’s challenging supply chain environment, resilience in the supply source and performance is paramount. Yearlong trials of ladle refractory on steel contact minutes and cost per ton were analyzed for vendor evaluations. Trials on alternate alloy additions were conducted for an extended period to implement new sustainable sources. A cross-functional team developed a digital process to ensure the critical consumables inventories were maintained to optimize the steel conversion cost. This paper discusses the trial performance and the digitization.
