Decarbonization Through Proven Energy-Efficiency Solutions and Use of Hydrogen in Reheat Furnaces
Oxy-fuel solutions can reduce fuel and CO2 emissions substantially. Linde’s REBOX Flameless Oxyfuel solutions have been installed in more than 180 reheat furnaces, with production up to 300 t/hr, contributing to decarbonization by 20-50% in those furnaces. Immediate decarbonization and fuel savings through partial or full conversion of reheat furnaces from air-fuel to oxy-fuel combustion also prepares the furnace for subsequent hydrogen fuels. Moreover, it increases throughput capacity, improves temperature uniformity, reduces NOx emissions and can lower scale losses. The first full-scale operation with 100% hydrogen as fuel was commissioned in 2023. The paper discusses technologies applied and results achieved.
